A man bound for his home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was caught by security as he tried to take a gun on his plane at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport Thursday afternoon.
Michael Shelton, 57, said he forgot the gun was in his bag.
However, thanks to the security employees, they saw the gun on an X-Ray image inside his bag as he was going to board his plane, an Allegiant Air Flight 890.
Officials say the gun was a Smith & Wesson 9 millimeter handgun.
Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies were called to the airport at 4:17 p.m. after officials from the Transportation Security Administration notified them of the situation.
Shelton, cooperative with deputies, but was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm and booked in the Pinellas County Jail.
