Man Escapes From Florida Panhandle Jail

BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida’s Panhandle are searching for a man who escaped from jail.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says 49-year-old William Lamar Mercer escaped from the county jail early Saturday.

Authorities say Mercer is 6-foot-1 with a medium build and blue eyes. Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel tells WMBB-TV (http://bit.ly/1AyoSRg ) that authorities do not believe Mercer is still in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (850) 674-5049.

Authorities say Mercer may have escaped through the jail’s kitchen area after breaking a lock. He was arrested Jan. 10 on a drug charge. His previous criminal record includes bank robbery and armed burglary charges.
