Georgia Man Dies In Police Custody During Breath Test

ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is probing the death of a 60-year-old man who died in police custody in northeast Georgia.

Athens-Clarke County police say 60-year-old John E. Marsden died Sunday morning at Athens Regional Medical Center. They say the death happened after the man became unresponsive while undergoing a breath test at Athens-Clarke County police headquarters.

Police say a report that someone ran over a stop sign led them to take Marsden into custody on suspicion of drunken driving.

Police said in a statement that there’s no indication “of any force issue involved” and that multiple video cameras recorded officers interacting with Marsden.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that an autopsy on Marsden’s body was planned.
