Lion Cubs Born At Miami Zoo

MIAMI (AP) — Zoo Miami is welcoming three lion cubs to its pride.

Zoo officials announced the births Tuesday. The cubs — two males and one female — are the first lions born in the zoo’s 33-year history. The Miami Herald reports that their mother, a 3-year-old named Kashifa, gave birth Sept. 24. Zoo officials say the baby lions appear to be in excellent health.

The cubs won’t be seen by the public for at least three months. Their mother shares the lion exhibit with her sister and two adult males, and zoo officials want to make sure the cubs can be introduced to the rest of the pride without incident.

Officials aren’t sure which of the lions is the cubs’ father, and male lions instinctively kill cubs that are not their own in the wild.
