Lake Worth Barn Fire Kills 12 Horses

LAKE WORTH, Fla. (AP) _ The owner of an equestrian center in suburban Palm Beach County says 12 horses are dead following a barn fire.

The fire broke out late Tuesday night at the South Florida Trotting Center in Lake Worth.

Sam Stathis tells the Palm Beach Post that 11 horses survived the fire.

They were taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.

He says two are in critical condition.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was reported just before midnight.

Investigators say the barn’s roof collapsed and the hay inside the barn helped feed the fire.

Crews remained on the scene early Wednesday and smoke was still pouring from the back of the barn.
