Clearwater Police have arrested a man who stole a donation box from a local church.
49 year old Richard Thoni has been charged with burglary in connection with the incident that occurred on Wednesday, March 30th, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, 820 Jasmine Way in Clearwater.
Thoni entered the unlocked church shortly after 5 p.m. on that day and forcefully removed the gold donation box that was anchored into the concrete wall near the front door. The box contained $20 in cash but was worth $150.
The crime was captured on church surveillance cameras.
Two days later, officers were called to the area near South Missouri Avenue and Druid Road after someone saw a man matching the description of the suspect. Officers made contact with Thoni and took him into custody after questioning him. He later made incriminating statements to detectives.
