IMMOKALEE, Fla. (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a knife-wielding man who refused orders to drop his weapon during a fight in a southwest Florida parking lot.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies responded to a 911 call about a fight between two people shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday in Immokalee. When he was ordered to drop the weapon, he headed toward the deputy.
According to the release, the deputy shot the man to “stop the threat.” No deputies were injured.
Both men were taken to the hospital. The man who was shot died a short time later but there was no word on the other man’s condition.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
The race of those involved was not released.
