About 100 miles northwest of Houston, in Hearne, Texas, 93-year-old Pearlie Golden was upset because he family wouldn’t give her the keys to her car. Family members say she retrieved a handgun that had belonged to her late husband, so they called police. Once they arrived, she fired two shots into the ground., and after she disobeyed Officer Stephen Stem’s orders to put down the weapon, he shot her four times, killing her. It was his second deadly shooting in less than two years on the 12-member force. The city council terminated his employment in less than 30 minutes in a special session on Saturday.
