Inmates Moved When Fire Breaks Out At Tampa Jail

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — About 160 inmates were evacuated when an electrical fire broke out at a Tampa jail.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says the fire broke at the Falkenberg Road location early Monday. Deputies responding to a fire alarm found an electrical panel was engulfed in flames. They began using firefighting equipment to extinguish the fire before Hillsborough Fire Rescue crews arrived.

The inmates were moved elsewhere in the jail. Deputies say the incident was over by 2 a.m. No one was injured.

Authorities say the housing area in that building is expected to be closed for several days while engineers determine what caused the fire. They believe it may be related to a lightning strike during a thunderstorm Sunday night.
