‘Indigenous People’ Day Could Replace Columbus Day

Let’s face it, Christopher Columbus didn’t really “discover” America. The native American Indians were already here. So a growing list of municipalities are reinventing the holiday to instead celebrate the cultures and values of Indigenous Peoples in their respective regions. Seattle and Minneapolis are two cities that for the first time are doing it this year.

Of course, the holiday has taken on a role as a celebration of Italian-American heritage, so the new theme isn’t exactly going over so well in those quarters.
