Hillsborough Closer To Tax Hike Referendum

Hillsborough County commissioners today agreed to hold an April 27th public hearing on $3.5 billion in needed transportation projects and whether to let voters decide in November whether they are willing to pay a half cent more in sales tax to fund those projects.

The plan is to put 60 percent of the money toward road building, and resurfacing and widening existing roads.

25 percent would pay for expanded routes to the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit bus system.

The plan includes no rail system in unincorporated areas of the county.

But Tampa would use its part for commuter rail between downtown Tampa and Tampa International Airport,
