Hernando Deputy Injured In Hit-And-Run

A Hernando County deputy received unspecified injuries early Saturday when a vehicle struck the side of his unmarked patrol car then sped away.

Deputy James Baker was treated at the scene of the 4:43 a.m. crash — Cortez Boulevard and U.S. 301 — then flown by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, where he was admitted. Authorities had not revealed the extent of his injuries.

Two people who were in the car that struck Baker’s cruiser later were apprehended and taken to the crash scene, Hernando County sheriff’s officials reported.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
