Funeral Set For Victim Of Boat Capsizing

Boat_Capsizing_2013MIAMI (AP) — A funeral is set in South Florida for one of four Haitian women who died in what authorities say was a failed smuggling venture.

Lodilia Escarment will be buried Saturday. The women died when a small overloaded boat capsized in mid-October in the waters off Miami.

Six of the 11 survivors found clinging to the overturned hull now face federal charges.

One of the other five survivors not facing charges told The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/Hlw0cs ) that the 25-foot, recreational fishing boat began its fatal journey on Haiti’s northwest coast.

Louisias Pierre says a group of eight Haitians were told they would board a bigger boat when they reached the Bahamas. However, Pierre says other migrants waded out to them and they never disembarked, nor was the boat ever refueled.
