Water Is OK After Water Main Break

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — It’s safe to use the water in Fort Lauderdale following a water main break over the long holiday weekend.

Officials say up to a quarter million people were affected by the incident, which happened on Christmas Eve. A boil water order was lifted Monday afternoon for residents in Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park and surrounding communities.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/snssS5 ) reports Fort Lauderdale officials hope to learn what caused the water main break on Tuesday.

Officials say the city’s automated phone system warned customers to boil tap water for cooking and cleaning. The city urges residents and businesses to sign up for a program called CodeRED to receive notifications during similar emergencies. Registration is available through the city’s web site.
