Police Say Mother Had Time to Protect Her Son From Father

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A Florida woman has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and child neglect charges in a February standoff that left her son, husband and an elderly man dead.

The plea was entered Monday on behalf of Deanna Beauchamp De Jesus of Port Orange.

Police say her husband William De Jesus fatally shot 76-Oliva Plante at a Deerfield Beach RV Park, then held police at bay for five hours.

Officers later found De Jesus dead of self-inflicted stab wounds and say he also killed his 9-year-old son.

Mrs. De Jesus and another son survived.

But investigators told the South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/JrcMvE ) that she had time to protect her children from their father and did nothing.

Mrs. De Jesus has previously accused her husband of domestic violence and making death threats.
