Fort Lauderdale Airport To Get Tall Control Tower

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is getting a tall new control tower.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports (http://sunsent.nl/whOnQL) the Federal Aviation Administration plans to build a 12-story tower — 117 feet tall — by mid-2014. The new tower will replace the old one built four decades ago and be equipped with sophisticated aircraft-tracking systems.

The price tag? More than $9 million in federal money. The Sentinel reports that although the tower will handle more air traffic, the airport has been hit hard by the slow economy.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday.

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport was built in 1941 as an auxiliary training airfield to the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station, now Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
