DEFENSE IN FLORIDA LOUD MUSIC KILLING COULD REST
Defense attorneys only plan to call one or two more witnesses in the trial of a Florida man charged with fatally shooting a teen after an argument over loud music. Defense attorneys for 47-year-old Michael Dunn could rest as early as Tuesday. Dunn says he acted in self-defense when he fatally shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis, of Marietta, Ga., outside the store in Jacksonville in November 2012.
FLORIDA EXPRESS JET TO OFFER NEW IN-STATE FLIGHTS
Florida Express Jet Travel says that it will begin offering new flights between Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tallahassee next month. The travel company announced the new services Monday. The flights are open for purchase, beginning as low as $69 for non-stop coach seats and include free Wi-Fi service for eight daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando and Orlando to Tallahassee.
MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING FAMILY TO FACE JURY
A Collier County judge says a murder trial later this year of a man accused of killing his wife and five children will be “graphic.” Mesac Damas is charged with six counts of first-degree murder. Authorities say the 34-year-old Damas is accused of cutting the throats of his wife and five young children in September 2009 in their home in southwest Florida.
QUARTER OF SENIORS SCORING 3 OR HIGHER ON AP TEST
More than a quarter of all Florida high school seniors are earning high enough scores on Advanced Placement tests to earn college credit. A report released Tuesday by the College Board shows 27 percent of Florida students graduating in 2013 scored a 3 or higher on an AP test. That passage rate was the fourth highest in the nation and a big jump from the state’s performance a decade before.
OPENING STATEMENTS SET FOR MONDAY MURDER TRIAL
Opening statements are set to begin in the murder trial of a man charged in the beating death of a former Pensacola News Journal reporter. A jury was selected on Monday, with opening statements set to begin Tuesday morning. William Cormier is charged with first-degree murder in the 2012 robbery and killing of Sean Dugas. Prosecutors say Cormier bludgeoned Dugas with a hammer and stole his collection of Magic: The Gathering Cards.
