SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN ORLANDO AND ATLANTA UP FOR MAJOR SCHOOL AWARD
The Orange County Public Schools district is competing with Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia.The Orange County school system is vying for the largest education award given to U.S. school districts. Officials will announce the $1 million Broad Prize for Urban Education on Monday
SECOND TRIAL IN LOUD MUSIC KILLING TO START MONDAY
Jury selection is set for Monday in the second trial of man accused of killing a teenager during a 2012 dispute over loud music outside a Jacksonville convenience store. Prosecutors say 17-year-old Jordan Davis died after 47-year-old Michael Dunn fired into the SUV where the teen was sitting. In a trial earlier this year, jurors found Dunn guilty on three counts of attempted murder, but they deadlocked on first-degree murder charges. He’s yet to be sentenced on the earlier conviction.
DIVER MISSING OFF FORT LAUDERDALE
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man who went missing Saturday while diving off Fort Lauderdale. Officials say Marc Raroha of Pompano Beach never surfaced while diving with two others on Saturday afternoon. The search was expected to continue on Monday.
NEW QUARTERBACK ERA BEGINS IN JACKSONVILLE
The Blake Bortles era has officially begun in Jacksonville. The Jaguars are counting on it resulting in more wins than the Byron Leftwich era, the David Garrard era, the Blaine Gabbert era and the Chad Henne era. Jacksonville turned things over to Bortles on Sunday, making the switch at halftime of what ended up being the team’s third lopsided loss in as many games this season. Bortles threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions in his NFL debut, a 44-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
DOLPHINS LOSE TO CHIEFS IN MIAMI
The Miami Dolphins had a 100-yard rusher, a two-turnover edge and five sacks against the opposing quarterback and still lost on Sunday — by 19 points. That’s tough to do, but poor tackling and a sputtering passing game doomed Miami in a 34-15 loss to the injury-riddled Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Dolphins fell to 1-2, another wobbly start for a team that hasn’t won a postseason game since 2000.
