CYCLIST FATALLY STRUCK BY TRAIN

Authorities say a commuter train fatally struck a 53-year-old cyclist near Fort Lauderdale. The crash happened Monday as Jerry Smith failed to yield at an intersection in Dania Beach. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said Monday that all safety equipment including lights, bells and gates were working properly as the train neared the intersection. Deputies say Smith navigated around the safety gates and tried to cross the tracks ahead of the train. He was struck and thrown off the bicycle.
