CRIST AND RICH MAKE FINAL PUSH FOR DEMOCRATS’ VOTES BEFORE PRIMARY DAY
A final, frenzied push for votes is underway in Democrats’ race to reclaim the governor’s mansion. Former Gov. Charlie Crist, the longtime Republican who is seeking to reclaim his old job as a Democrat, has planned events in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Wellington and Fort Lauderdale on Monday. His underdog opponent, former Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich, is spending time at a phone bank at her Weston campaign headquarters making last-minute get-out-the-vote calls. Both candidates are vying for a shot to unseat Gov. Rick Scott, who has two mostly unknown primary challengers of his own.
TROPICAL STORM CRISTOBAL LASHES CARIBBEAN; FORECASTERS EXPECT STRENGTHENING
Floridians are keeping a watchful eye on Tropical Storm Cristobal, which formed Sunday and brought heavy rainfall and white-crested surf to the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. Swollen rivers swept at least three people away in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, but forecasters expected the storm to curve away from the U.S. east coast.
4 FOUND DEAD IN WATER OFF SOUTH FLORIDA COAST
Officials are still trying to determine the identities of four men whose bodies were found floating off the South Florida coastline. The bodies were discovered Sunday off Hollywood Beach. The Miami Herald reports the remains were taken to the Broward County medical examiner’s office and the Broward Sheriff’s Office has joined the investigation.
UNDER CRITICISM, CITY COUNCIL TO RECONSIDER BAN ON SAGGY PANTS IN OCALA
After voting in favor of an ordinance outlawing sagging pants that expose undergarments, two Ocala councilmen now say the law is too ambiguous to enforce. The statute came under fire from opponents who claim it targets young black men with threats of fines and jail sentences of up to 60 days. A special meeting will be held Tuesday on the issue.
“DOLPHIN FOR LIFE” DAN MARINO RETURNING TO TEAM IN ADVISORY ROLE
Dan Marino, the Miami Dolphins’ all-time leader in numerous passing categories, is returning to the team as a special adviser to owner Stephen Ross. The specifics of his new role haven’t been laid out, but the team said he’ll serve “in a variety of different capacities.” Marino says he’s always considered himself “a Dolphin for life.”
