Florida’s Turnpike Closed After 2 Crashes

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Florida’s Turnpike remains closed south of Orlando after a tractor-trailer carrying 130 calves overturned.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a second crash involving three tractor-trailers and one car a short time later created additional traffic problems. They expect the turnpike to reopen later Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Kim Montes says the original crash happened on the northbound turnpike about 2:21 a.m. Numerous calves were on the loose on both sides of the highway and animal control officials from Osceola County arrived to help herd the cattle. The vehicle owner also sent another truck to haul the calves away.

About an hour later, a Fed-Ex truck traveling south failed to slow down as it approached the stopped traffic and collided with another tractor-trailer. Seven people suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.
