TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — House Redistricting Committee Chairman Will Weatherford says the GOP-controlled Florida Legislature is not targeting Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West.
In a post on his Facebook page Monday, Weatherford wrote that claim is “patently false.”
West, a tea party favorite, unseated Democrat Ron Klein in the Republican sweep in 2010.
Redistricting plans drafted by the Florida Legislature, though, would give West’s South Florida district a decidedly Democratic lean.
That’s drawn complaints from some conservatives including radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
He said it appears to be an attempt by establishment Republicans to “take the tea party out.”
Weatherford said in his post that the congressional map was drawn to comply with new anti-gerrymandering standards in the Florida Constitution.
He wrote he personally supports West but that cannot trump the constitution.
