University Leaders Visiting FL House Panel

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — More state university presidents are set to appear before the Florida House Education Committee.

The panel is continuing its talks Wednesday with the presidents as part of efforts to improve the coordination of Florida’s higher education system.

Last week, the University of Florida’s Bernie Machen and Florida State University’s Eric Barron suggested raising tuition for science, technology, engineering and math students to help pay the higher cost of teaching so-called STEM classes.

Gov. Rick Scott has been pushing for the universities to increase the output of STEM graduates because they have better job prospects.

Wednesday’s schedule includes the presidents of the universities of Central Florida, South Florida, North Florida and West Florida. Also appearing are the presidents of Florida Gulf Coast University and New College of Florida.
