Tampa Deputies Shoot A Shooter

Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies shot a suspect Tuesday that they were seeking in connection with another shooting earlier in the night that left a Thonotosassa man with life-threatening wounds.

Deputies arrived at the initial shooting at 9203 113th Ave. in Thonotosassa after receiving a 911 call around 9 p.m. reporting a domestic dispute. There they found a man, whom they had not identified late Tuesday, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the chest.

The man was taken to Tampa General Hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was known to his victim and witnesses, said Sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon. Using vehicle and tag information, he was tracked to a home at 7508 Huntley Ave. in Tampa.

Deputies approached the back of the home accompanied by a canine. The suspect, also not identified, was found hiding beneath a tarp in the back yard.

When asked to come out from beneath the tarp with his hands up, the suspect emerged with a gun in his hand and deputies fired several times, McKinnon said. No deputies were wounded.

The suspect also was taken to Tampa General, where he was listed in serious condition.

McKinnon could not immediately say how many shots were fired. But he said two deputies would be placed on routine administrative leave while the incident is reviewed.

He said deputies were investigating what led to the initial shooting.
