System In Gulf Is Test Run For Hurricane Season

A lurking low-pressure system is moving north into the Gulf of Mexico is expected to bring heavy rain to Brevard County this week.

Though it’s the first system of the hurricane season, which officially started Saturday, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say it has little chance of becoming a tropical storm. The system of disorganized storms was moving north off the Yucatan Peninsula and into the gulf this morning.

“What that’s going to mean for us is tropical moisture coming our way, really starting today,” said Arlena Moses, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

She said heavy rain is expected in Brevard County through the work week.
