Suspect Sought in Fatal Hit-and-Run

Tampa, FL — Detectives are searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist Sunday at West Waters Avenue and Ashley Street North.

According to police, 55-year-old Michael Swanson, of Tampa, was riding his bicycle south across West Waters Avenue and was crossing into the eastbound lanes when the vehicle hit or grazed him.

Police say Swanson fell to the ground, but got up and pushed his bike out of the road. When he made to the side of the road, he collapsed. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the red 4-door sedan, possibly an early 2000s model fled the scene east on Waters Avenue and then turned north on Florida Avenue.

Police say the car may have a cracked front light and a small amount of silver transfer paint on the front bumper. Detectives are looking for any information on the vehicle. They say it is possible the driver was not aware they hit Swanson.
