TAMPA — Severe storms moved quickly Wednesday afternoon through the Tampa Bay area, downing trees and power lines and causing dangerous driving conditions in eastern Hillsborough County.
In Dover, a mobile home at Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park, 12640 Jess Walden Road, was smashed by a tree. A mother and five children who were inside the home told reporters they escaped uninjured by climbing out a window.
Tampa Electric Co. reported that hundreds of customers in eastern Hillsborough were without power, some well into the night.
There were initial reports of a possible tornado in the area, but Bay News 9 meteorologist Brian McClure said it more likely was gusts of wind that could have reached 70 mph.
There were reports of downed trees across the area and several inoperative traffic lights. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reminded drivers that if a traffic signal isn’t working, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.
