St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon has announced he is retiring as of Jan. 6.
Harmon, 53, has been St. Petersburg’s police chief since 2001. He was selected by then-Mayor Rick Baker to replace Mack Vines after Vines made a remark likening an out-of-control suspect to an orangutan.
Harmon has been criticized for a lack of leadership in the ongoing mayoral campaign, especially in the black communities of South St. Petersburg, where neighborhood leaders have criticized the department over a series of officer-involved shootings and chases.
