Science Incentives Urged For FL Colleges

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A panel of higher education and business leaders says Florida’s colleges and universities should offer incentives for studying science, technology, engineering and math.

Encouraging so-called STEM studies was one of several recommendations the Higher Education Coordinating Council made Monday to the Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott.

It’s something Scott also has advocated.

The panel called, as well, for performance-based accountability in higher education, another issue Scott is pushing.

Other proposals include cost and employment-demand studies on new course offerings and letting colleges and universities run their own pre-kindergarten through 12th grade charter schools.

Another recommendation is to align financial aid programs to encourage and accelerate access, graduation and finishing degrees on time.

The Legislature is expected to consider the recommendations after it convenes on Jan. 10.
