Police Find Car Stolen At Family Dollar Robbery

TAMPA — Police have recovered a car that was stolen after a robbery that turned deadly Sunday at a Family Dollar store in East Tampa.

Police found the car, a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage, abandoned Sunday evening at 2503 38th Ave., officials said, about 2 miles from where 49-year-old store manager and 20-year military veteran Horsley Shorter Jr. was gunned down the day before.

Detectives were still trying Monday to figure out the identity of the man who killed Shorter. They released a surveillance image of a man Sunday and issued an appeal to the public for tips.

The shooting happened about 9 a.m. when an armed robber came into the store and demanded money from a clerk behind the counter. Shorter, who was inside his office, was shot when he ran out to help his co-worker, police said.
