It will be the third time the area has hosted the game and the Arizona committee screamed in delight when the announcement was made Tuesday.
Phoenix beat Tampa Bay in the bidding on the second ballot. Tampa has hosted the game in 1984, 1991, 2001 and 2009.
Next year’s game is in Indianapolis, followed by New Orleans in 2013 and the New York/New Jersey area in 2014.
Arizona was the Super Bowl host in 1996 and 2008. The Bay area, which was seeking its fifth Super Bowl, hosted the big game in 1984, 1991, 2001 and 2009.
