Naples Man Dies After Kayak Tips Over in Lake

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a man died when his kayak overturned in a lake in an East Naples community.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Carli Segelson says 65-year-old Walter Coutu was alone when the kayak tipped over Monday afternoon. He was underwater for about 15 minutes.

The Naples Daily News reports that neighbor Hanz Lange saw Coutu in distress and swam about 125 feet into the lake to try to help. The 71-year-old Lange says he was able to pull Coutu about 30 feet before the man took a last gasp and went under.

Authorities found Coutu’s body about 15 minutes after they arrived.
