NAPLES, Fla. (AP) – Florida’s high school football players will spend less time in practice at the start of their preseason.
The Florida High School Athletic Association board of directors voted in June to prohibit two-a-day practices during the first week of the season.
In the season’s second week, teams can practice twice in one day only if they practice just once the following day.
By limiting two-a-days, the FHSAA hopes to reduce the risk for heat-related illnesses.
High school football preseason practices begin Monday.
Some coaches say the new rules are limiting athletes that already are conditioned from working out all summer.
Naples High School football coach Bill Kramer tells the Naples Daily News (http://bit.ly/QtZruc ) that the rule is written for “the bottom 1 percent who get kids out there who aren’t conditioned.”
