Haiti’s President Visits South Florida

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Haiti’s president is visiting South Florida.

President Michel Martelly is scheduled to meet with members of the Haitian-American community Monday evening in North Miami Beach.

Haiti’s government has been pitching business and tourism opportunities in the Caribbean country to Haitians living abroad, along with international investors.

Martelly has faced criticism at home.

Anti-government demonstrations have been held in Haiti’s capital and countryside to air a range of grievances, including alleged corruption in Martelly’s administration.

Last month, a small group of ex-soldiers emerged from hiding to renew their demand that Martelly honor his campaign promise to re-establish Haiti’s military.

The group embarrassed Haiti’s government earlier this year by seizing old military bases to press for the restoration of the disbanded army.

Martelly took office in May 2011.
