PONTE VEDRE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a north Florida man was found dead after a more than two-hour standoff with sheriff’s deputies.
St. Johns County Sheriff’s spokesman Chuck Mulligan says deputies responded to a Thursday night call about a despondent Ponte Vedre Beach man who may have been a danger to himself.
The St. Augustine Record (http://bit.ly/wcjN3d ) reports the man fired at deputies as they attempted contact with him.
Mulligan says deputies did not return fire. The Fountains condominium complex was evacuated as the standoff continued.
A hostage negotiation team tried to talk to the man before a bomb robot was sent inside the condo around 11 p.m. The man was found dead inside.
His name has not been released.
