PLANT CITY, Fla. (AP) — The driver accused in the fatal hit-and-run death of a teen over the weekend may be in the country illegally.
U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement put a detainer on 23-year-old Timoteo Gabriel DeJesus after he was arrested late Monday.
DeJesus is accused of crashing into 16-year-old Brandon Sullivan, who was walking to a store Sunday in Plant City, east of Tampa. He was dead at the scene. His friend, 15-year-old Erick Gonzalez, was hospitalized with a broken leg.
State records show DeJesus is wanted on a battery charge and has several previous arrests. He was on the road despite not having a driver’s license.
He was being held without bail. Jail records did not list an attorney.
