Davie Ophthalmologist Dies in Plane Crash

VENICE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida ophthalmologist died when his twin-engine plane crashed between two runways at Venice Municipal Airport.

Authorities say 63-year-old Andres Bustillo was bound for Lafayette, Ga., when he reported engine trouble and attempted to return to the Venice airport about 2:05 p.m. Monday.

The Miami Herald reports Bustillo practiced at offices in Pompano Beach and Hialeah.

Witnesses told authorities they saw the plane flying low over the beach prior to the crash. Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.

The newspaper reports Bustillo’s pilot’s license was issued in March 2006. The Federal Aviation Administration says he was approved to fly single-engine and multi-engine planes.
