Coast Guard Returns Over 200 Haitians

MIAMI (AP) _ The U.S. Coast Guard says it has returned more than 200 Haitians picked up at sea to their Caribbean homeland.

Coast Guard officials said Thursday that 219 Haitians were returned this week to Cap-Haitien, Haiti.

More than 130 Haitians were picked up Sunday after a Coast Guard crew intercepted their sail freighter in the waters northwest of Great Inagua, Bahamas.

The Royal Bahamian Defense Force intercepted a 40-foot boat Monday off Castle Island, Bahamas.

The 88 Haitians on board were transferred to a Coast Guard vessel.

Coast Guard officials say their crews gave the Haitians food, water and basic medical care before repatriating them.
