Black Bear Charges Wildlife Officer

AVE MARIA, Fla. (AP) _ A black bear has been shot and killed after it charged at a state wildlife officer in southwest Florida.

Authorities tell WBBH-TV in Fort Myers (http://bit.ly/SwUiPe ) that the 250-pound male bear was first spotted on the Ave Maria University campus.

It later showed up in a nearby Collier County neighborhood.

Residents say the bear rummaged through garbage, wandered into garages and chased people getting into their cars.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers shot and killed the bear Sunday.

Commission spokesman Jorge Pino says the bear charged at an officer who tried to back away from the bear.

Pino says the officer fired as a last resort.
