FLORIDA MAN GETS 8+ YEARS PRISON IN CHECKS FRAUD
A South Florida man has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to identity theft and cashing stolen government checks. Prosecutors say 45-year-old Victor Diroggiero of Miami cashed more than 100 stolen tax refund, Social Security and other government checks over several months in 2009. All of them were cashed at a North Miami check cashing store.
USF TAKES STEP TO BUILD NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL
The University of South Florida took the first formal step to build its new medical school downtown, with a trustees’ work group voting unanimously for the project. The dean of the Morsani College of Medicine unveiled renderings Thursday of a 12-story, $157 million building in downtown Tampa on property donated by the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team.
ENDEAVOR PICKS 4 NEW MIAMI ENTREPRENEURS
For the global business-backed nonprofit Endeavor, this round’s Miami selections were all about food. The group chose four new Miami entrepreneurs this month to add to the worldwide list of companies it’s helping to scale. Endeavor’s mission is to strengthen and support individual “high-impact” entrepreneurs it believes can create economic opportunity and development within their communities and beyond.
POLICE: MENTALLY ILL JACKSONVILLE MAN KILLS MOM
A northeast Florida woman who frequently reported domestic abuse at the hands of her mentally ill son is dead after authorities say the son suffocated her. Jacksonville police say 28-year-old Henry Harriford was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of his mother, 59-year-old Janette Harriford. The woman’s body was discovered by concerned co-workers who went to her apartment to check on her well-being.
2 NURSING ASSISTANTS ACCUSED OF ELDER ABUSE
Police say a hidden camera inside an alarm clock captured images of two certified nursing assistants at Palm Garden of Winter Haven nursing home abusing a 76-year-old Alzheimer’s patient. The Ledger of Lakeland reports the man’s son put the camera inside the room after noticing unexplained bruises on his father’s arms and legs. Police found three incidents of abuse on Oct. 7, Oct. 16 and Oct. 24. The nursing assistants face charges of felony battery on a person over 65.
