AL CAPONE’S RESTORED MIAMI BEACH MANSION HOLDING OPEN HOUSE
The new owners of Al Capone’s mansion in Miami Beach are holding a media open house to show off an extensive restoration project. The house where the notorious Chicago gangster died in 1947 will be on display Wednesday. The nearly 90-year-old property had been in a long decline until its recent purchase by a private investor. Miami-based MB America says it will be available for video and photo shoots. County property records say the nine-bedroom mansion is valued at about $5.6 million.
OFF-DUTY FLORIDA OFFICER SHOOTS SUSPECTED CARJACKER IN BUTTOCKS
An off-duty deputy police chief in north Florida says he shot a 15-year-old boy in the buttocks after being pistol-whipped during an attempted carjacking. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says University of North Florida Deputy Police Chief Bill Strudel was attacked at around 9 p.m. Monday night. Strudel needed numerous stitches to his head.
LAWYER FOR FUGITIVE TREASURE HUNTER SAYS CLIENT CAN’T PAY
The lawyer for a deep-sea treasure hunter who spent years as a fugitive wants off the case, saying his client can’t pay. Columbus attorney William Mattes (ma-TISS’) says insurance coverage used throfloridaughout the case of defendant Tommy Thompson has been exhausted. Mattes said in a federal court filing this week that Thompson and other defendants have failed to make arrangements to pay for past and future representation despite being informed they need to do so.
25 YEARS LATER, SEARCH CONTINUES FOR KILLER OF GIRL IN PALM BEACH COUNTY
It’s been 25 years since Rachel Hurley was killed, but her parents and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are still searching for her killer. Rachel Hurley was 14 when she was raped and murdered in Jupiter. On Tuesday, Andrea Hurley and Det. William Springer spoke about the case, hoping to jog someone’s memory for new leads. The teen was with friends at Jupiter Beach Inlet Park with friends on St. Patrick’s Day 1990 when she disappeared. Friends said she had cut through a wooded area near the beach on her way to meet her mother. Her beaten body was found later that day. She had been suffocated.
MISSISSIPPI COMPANY MOVING TO FLORIDA
Headquarters for a 60-year-old Meridian company with more than 40 branches throughout Mississippi and Louisiana will relocate to Florida in July. Financial Management and Investment Corp. will move its headquarters from Meridian to Pensacola, Florida, said company CEO Tag Purvis.
