FLORIDA GOVERNOR TO UNVEIL SPENDING PLAN FOR 2014
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is unveiling his spending priorities for the coming year. The Republican governor is scheduled to announce his budget recommendations on Wednesday during the annual legislative planning meeting hosted by The Associated Press. State lawmakers will use the proposed budget as a framework for a final budget that will be passed during the annual session that starts in March.
HEARING SET IN FLORIDA FACEBOOK SLAYING CASE
Another court hearing is scheduled for the South Florida man accused of fatally shooting his wife during an argument and posting photos of her body on Facebook. The Wednesday morning hearing could address several issues in the case against 31-year-old Derek Medina. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the August killing of 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso. Medina’s attorneys say he acted in self-defense.
MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF WHILE FLEEING DEPUTIES
Authorities say a man being chased by Tampa Bay area deputies fatally shot himself rather than go to jail. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies responded to a vehicle burglary call in a residential Bradenton neighbor Monday night. When deputies chased and eventually cornered 22-year-old Elias Guadarrama, the sheriff’s office reports Guadarrama shot himself in the head.
RECKLESS DRIVING CHARGES AGAINST PUIG DROPPED
Prosecutors in Naples have dropped charges against Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig. In a memo, they explained that excessive speed wasn’t enough to prosecute the case. The 23-year-old was arrested Dec. 28 at the western edge of Alligator Alley.
MIAMI DOLPHINS INTRODUCE NEW GM
The Miami Dolphins introduced Dennis Hickey (pictured) as general manager of the team on Tuesday afternoon. He replaces Jeff Ireland, who was fired after the tumultuous 2013 season.
