2 CHARGED IN $70M FLORIDA ‘VIRTUAL CONCIERGE’ FRAUD
Two South Florida men are facing fraud charges in an alleged $70 million scheme using investments in so-called “virtual concierge” machines that operate in retail stores. Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that 49-year-old Joseph Signore and 56-year-old Paul Schumack were arrested. Both are charged with several conspiracy and fraud charges. Their attorneys did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
FAMOUS FLORIDA PIG TO BE FEATURED IN PBS DOCUMENTARY
A Florida pig that was born with non-working legs and received a second chance at life thanks to a specially-made wheelchair will be the star of a TV documentary. Chris P. Bacon will appear in the PBS documentary series “Nature” at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in an episode entitled “My Bionic Pet.” Veterinarian Len Lucero adopted the pig when someone brought it to his clinic, wanting to euthanize the animal.
BRIDGE TO PALM BEACH CLOSING FOR 6 MONTHS
One of the bridges connecting the island of Palm Beach with the mainland is expected to be closed for about six months. State transportation officials say Flagler Memorial Bridge will be closed May 5. The bridge connects Palm Beach and West Palm Beach and will ultimately be replaced by a new span to its south. The bridge is expected to reopen in November.
MIAMI OFFICER SHOOTS MAN WIELDING MACHETE
Officials say a Miami police officer shot a man who was wielding a machete at a public park. Police say an officer responded to a violent call at Juan Pablo Duarte Park Tuesday afternoon. The officer spotted the man with a machete near the entrance, and a confrontation with the man led to the officer firing his gun. The unidentified man was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was undergoing surgery.
9-YEAR-OLD BOY CHARGED WITH STEALING MOM’S CAR
Authorities say a 9-year-old South Florida boy stole his mother’s car because he didn’t want to go to school. Miami Gardens police say the boy threw a brick at his mother and grandmother Tuesday morning before grabbing his mom’s keys and taking off. He reportedly drove around for about 45 minutes until police pulled him over. The boy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and grand theft auto.
