NEW EVERGLADES CURRICULUM AVAILABLE TO TEACHERS
A state-approved curriculum to guide classes about the Everglades is now available to Florida teachers. The Everglades Foundation unveiled lesson plans for grades kindergarten through 12 on Monday in West Palm Beach. The Palm Beach Post reports the curriculum was tested in pilot programs in five counties.
93-YEAR-OLD APOPKA MAYOR WANTS ANOTHER TERM
Voters in the Orlando suburb of Apopka are deciding whether to return their 93-year-old mayor to office. If Mayor John Land (pictured) wins Tuesday’s runoff election, he will extend his tenure as one of the longest-serving fulltime mayors in the nation. He has been in office since 1949, except for three years. His challenger is Apopka commissioner Joel Kilsheimer, a former newspaper reporter and a self-employed media consultant.
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA METEOROLOGIST INJURED IN BIKE CRASH
A southwest Florida TV meteorologist has been seriously injured in a bicycle crash. WBBH NBC2 reports that Jim Reif, the station’s director of meteorology, was involved in a bicycle accident Sunday afternoon. While Reif was riding, his bicycle hit a sign, throwing him to the ground. The station said Reif hit his head on the curb and he has suffered traumatic injuries to the head.
SOUTH FLORIDA MAN KILLED DURING FIGHT WITH DEPUTY
Authorities say a South Florida burglary suspect was shot during a fight with a deputy. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reports that 31-year-old Tinoris Williams was killed Monday afternoon in suburban West Palm Beach. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during a news conference that the deputy had been responding to a burglary call when Williams attacked. The deputy was hospitalized with eye damage.
FLORIDA WOMAN ARRESTED IN DEADLY WRONG-WAY CRASH
A woman who tweeted about being drunk before getting into a wrong-way South Florida expressway crash that killed two other women has been arrested. The Florida Highway Patrol reported Monday that 21-year-old Kayla Mendoza was charged in the November deaths of Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Cantronio. Police say Mendoza was driving the wrong way on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County and slammed into the car driven by Ferrante.
