FLORIDA OFFICER ON LEAVE AFTER USING STUN GUN ON WOMAN
A Florida police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation after he fired a stun gun into a 62-year-old woman’s back during an arrest in a Tallahassee neighborhood. Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo called a news conference early Wednesday morning to announce the investigation after authorities obtained a video capturing the Tuesday afternoon incident that was shot by someone on a nearby porch.
MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER IN KILLING OVER LOUD MUSIC
A jury has found a Florida man guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a teenager after an argument over loud music outside a Jacksonville convenience store. The jury reached its verdict Wednesday after more than five hours of deliberations. Prosecutors say Michael Dunn shot with intent to kill when he fired 10 times into an SUV carrying 17-year-old Jordan Davis and three of his friends in November 2012.
SUPREME COURT ASKED TO DECIDE NEW MAP FOR CONGRESS
A divided appeals court wants the Florida Supreme Court to decide if the state’s new congressional map is legal. The 1st District Court of Appeal on Wednesday ruled to send the case up to the state’s highest court immediately instead of letting the appeals court review it. The ruling was decided 2-1 with one judge dissenting. A Florida judge approved a new congressional map in August. The new map alters seven of the state’s existing 27 districts, but the changes will not take effect this year.
MIAMI OKS MILLIONS TO CLEAN CONTAMINATED PARKS
Officials in Miami are setting aside millions of dollars to clean and reopen parks that were closed due to contamination. Health concerns were raised a year ago when concerns related to a toxic plume at an old incinerator led to an investigation more than 100 city parks.
MAN COLLECTS $21K IN COINS, DONATES TO CATS
A Manatee County man has donated more than $21,000 in spare change he’s picked up over the years to a local animal rescue. The Bradenton Herald reports that Rick Snyder has collected the loose coins over 10 years. On Tuesday, volunteers from the Gulf Shore Animal League went to his home to help him gather 2,500 pounds of coins.
