FLORIDA GOVERNOR’S RACE COULD BE HISTORIC
The outcome in Florida’s brutal and expensive race for governor is likely to be historic regardless of what happens on Election Day. Incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Republican-turned-Democrat Charlie Crist have been locked in a tight race for weeks now that has been bitter and personal. Scott is trying to become the second GOP governor ever in state history to win re-election and it would be remarkable since his approval ratings have never been over 50 percent. If Crist wins, it would mean a former governor taking back his old job after switching parties. Crist is running for governor four years after he gave up the office to mount an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate.
ESCAPED INMATE CAUGHT IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Police in South Florida have arrested an inmate who escaped from prison on Halloween. The Florida Department of Corrections reports that West Palm Beach police captured 39-year-old Ronald McCoy Monday evening, following up on a tip received by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He was still wearing his prison uniform.
FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER DIED OF HEAT STROKE
A medical examiner has ruled the death of a 14-year-old high school football player at practice in north Florida as accidental, finding the boy died of heat stroke. The Alachua County medical examiner on Monday released autopsy results in the Aug. 13 death of William Shogran Jr., a home school student from the central Florida coast who played football for Sebastian River High School.
PICASSO EXHIBIT TO OPEN AT DALI MUSEUM IN FLORIDA
The Salvador Dali Museum in Florida is opening a Pablo Picasso exhibit that includes paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture. It’s called “Picasso/Dali, Dali/Picasso” and it explores the rivalry and inspiration between the two famous Spanish artists. Dali was a young, adoring fan when he met Picasso in Paris in 1926, by which time the older artist had claimed his fame. The exhibit opens Saturday and runs through Feb. 15, 2015.
SALVATION ARMY LOOKING FOR BELL RINGERS
The Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers as the holiday season approaches. The Army’s branches in Broward and Miami-Dade counties are looking for people to ring bells during the annual Red Kettle Campaign. The job lasts through Christmas Eve and pays $8.50 an hour.
