GEORGIA GIRL STRUCK BY PLANE ON FLORIDA BEACH DIES
A 9-year-old girl who was struck by a plane that crash-landed on a beach while she vacationed with her family has died from her injuries, law enforcement officials in Florida said Tuesday. Oceana Irizzary’s father also was killed Sunday. The two, of Fort Stewart, Georgia, were walking along Caspersen Beach in Venice on Sunday afternoon when the 1972 Piper Cherokee plane made an emergency landing after reporting problems.
BUSINESS DENIES HIRING ZIMMERMAN FOR SECURITY
The manager of a Florida business where George Zimmerman was questioned by police says Zimmerman was never hired to provide security, despite his claims to authorities. DeLand police report that two officers spotted Zimmerman and his dog parked behind Pompano Pat’s, a motorcycle and gun store, early Sunday and approached him. According to a police report, Zimmerman told officers the owner gave him permission to be there to provide security after a recent burglary.
APPEALS COURT UPHOLDS JUDGMENT AGAINST TD BANK
A federal appeals court has upheld a judgment for TD Bank to pay an investment group $67 million for their complicity in disbarred South Florida attorney Scott Rothstein’s $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta made its ruling Tuesday. The original lawsuit was filed by Texas-based Coquina Investments. It claimed Rothstein used a TD Bank branch in Florida and some of its employees to persuade investors that the scam involving phony legal settlements was legitimate.
BAD SANTA PLEADS NO CONTEST TO BANK ROBBERY
A bad Santa faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading no contest to displaying a fake bomb during a bank robbery in central Florida. The 63-year-old Mark N. London donned a Santa hat, beard and white gloves before walking into a SunTrust Bank in Port Orange on Dec. 23. He carried a wrapped gift and a note implying the “gift” was dangerous and that he wanted cash.
CRAYON-MAKER CRAYOLA TO OPEN IN ORLANDO
Crayon manufacturer Crayola is building a family attraction in Florida, similar to the one it operates in its home state of Pennsylvania, and more could be on the way around the country. The company said Tuesday that Crayola Experience Orlando will open next summer at The Florida Mall.
