FLORIDA PANHANDLE MAN WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH THREE HOMICIDES CAPTURED IN ALABAMA
Authorities say Derrick Ray Thompson was taken into custody without incident early Tuesday in Troy, Alabama, on a warrant for the slaying of nightclub owner Allen Johnson. Thompson also was wanted for questioning in the deaths of a Milton couple, Steven and Debra Zackowski.
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY ADDRESSES SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND CAMPUS SAFETY AMID FEDERAL PROBE
Florida State is hiring a Title IX director and two sexual violence prevention coordinators before the fall term starts in five weeks. Interim President Garnett Stokes says the university has formed several committees to assess its response to sexual violence complaints and is preparing to make changes. Florida State is one of 55 colleges and universities being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights for possible Title IX violations.
HEALTH OFFICIALS CRACK DOWN ON MEDICAID MARKETING
Florida has banned health insurance companies from marketing their plans directly to Medicaid recipients as the state rolls out its massive plan to privatize its health insurance program for low-income individuals and the disabled. Private companies that have contracted with the state to provide care for Medicaid patients are allowed to market to consumers with prior state approval. However, the Agency for Health Care Administration says marketing events are currently banned because officials want to focus on enrollment and making sure patients don’t experience lapses in care during the transition.
POLICE SAY SOUTH FLORIDA MAN STABBED EX-GIRLFRIEND’S 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER
Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa says Miguel Ruiz Lobo did not get along with Martha Guzman, who had convinced her mother to dump him. The girl’s mother found her June 25 in a pool of blood with a knife in her throat. Police say Lobo tried to make the slaying look like a suicide but sliced through tendons in the girl’s wrists, which would have made it impossible for her to stab herself in the throat. According to police, DNA found in skin under Martha’s fingernails has been matched to Lobo.
DAN BORISLOW, MAGICJACK INVENTOR, DIES AT 52
The man who invented the popular magicJack device has died in Florida. He was 52. MagicJack Vocaltec Ltd. says in a statement that Dan Borislow died Monday. MagicJack pioneered voice-over-Internet calling that was advertised as a means of “eliminating your monthly phone bill forever” and became available in thousands of stores. More than 10 million have been sold.
