FLORIDA GAY MARRIAGE BAN HEADS FOR MIDNIGHT END
A stay expires late Monday in a federal judge’s ruling striking down the ban enacted in 2008 by voters. Meanwhile, a Miami-Dade County judge has a hearing Monday morning on whether to lift a stay of her previous ruling invalidating the ban. In anticipation, gay couples married in other states set a mass renewal of vows Tuesday night in Miami Beach.
TAMPA’S RNC HOST COMMITTEE MARKS FINAL TALLY
The last delegate left town more than two years ago, but the Tampa Bay Host Committee for the 2012 Republican National Convention did not officially go out of business until recently. The nonprofit committee has filed its final report with the Federal Elections Commission, saying it had given away all the money it had left over after the convention. To stage the convention, the local host committee raised about $55.3 million.
BANKRUPTCY JUDGE WEIGHS PROPOSED SALE OF ATLANTIC CITY’S EX-REVEL CASINO TO FLORIDA DEVELOPER
A federal judge will consider the proposed sale of Atlantic City’s former Revel casino to the runner-up bidder in last year’s bankruptcy court auction. But how much Florida developer Glenn Straub should pay for it remains in dispute as the issue is reviewed in court on Monday. After a deal to sell Revel to a Canadian firm for $110 million fell through last year, the casino’s management turned to Straub’s Polo North Country Club as the backup bidder that offered $95.4 million. But Straub says the price should be lower now.
PALACE: SEX CLAIMS AGAINST PRINCE ANDREW ARE FALSE
Buckingham Palace on Sunday stepped up efforts to defend Prince Andrew after the British royal was embroiled in claims of sexual impropriety with an underage woman. In a second statement since the claims surfaced, officials “emphatically denied” allegations by an unidentified woman who said she was forced to have sex with the royal when she was under the age of 18. The woman named 54-year-old Prince Andrew in papers filed with a Florida court last week. The filing was submitted as part of a lengthy lawsuit against American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who the woman claims forced her to have sex with prominent people. She has also claims she was forced to have sex with high-profile attorney Alan Dershowitz.
BOY NEARLY DROWNS IN CRUISE SHIP WAVE POOL
A 4-year-old boy is being treated at a South Florida hospital after nearly drowning in a wave pool on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, just after the ship departed from Port Everglades. The ship returned to port Saturday evening. According to emergency officials, the boy was swept underwater for between five and 10 minutes. He was immediately treated by the ship’s medical team, but needed additional treatment.
