PROSECUTOR: NO PLANS TO INVESTIGATE COMPLAINT OVER OUSTER
A Tallahassee prosecutor says he won’t investigate whether Gov. Rick Scott and three Cabinet officials violated the state’s open meetings law. A St. Petersburg attorney filed a complaint with State Attorney Willie Meggs and asked him to look at whether or not there was anything wrong in the ouster of Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey. Meggs said Thursday that he won’t investigate because Weidner based his complaint on media coverage of the case and not personal knowledge.
MISSING FLORIDA OIL TYCOON DECLARED DEAD BY JUDGE
A Florida oil tycoon missing at sea for more than two years has been declared dead by a judge at the request of his widow and mother. Guma Aguiar disappeared June 19, 2012. The 35-year-old father of four was last seen aboard his 30-foot boat as it left Port Everglades. The boat was later recovered, but there was no sign of Aguiar. Foul play is not suspected, and family members suspect he fell overboard.
CLUB OWNED BY PRO WRESTLER TOLD TO TONE IT DOWN
After complaints from neighbors and warnings, a bar owned by wrestler Hulk Hogan will no longer hold large-scale music concerts. The decision comes after the nightclub received three warning notices to curb concerts that drew up to 5,000 revelers and had neighbors complaining of late-night thumping bass, drunken and unruly behavior and parking hassles. To avoid potential code fines, the club is working with the city to determine what kinds of events they can hold.
COUPLE CHARGED IN ADOPTIVE DAUGHTER’S DEATH BACK IN COURT
Jorge and Carmen Barahona have pleaded not guilty to murder charges after their daughter’s body was found partially decomposed in the back of her father’s truck along I-95 in West Palm Beach in 2011. Her brother survived, but was badly burned after being doused with a toxic chemical. The state is seeking the death penalty. Several trial dates have been pushed back as the case has dragged along. The Barahonas are scheduled to appear in court in Miami Friday afternoon.
AS ROMNEY WEIGHS 2016 BID, HIS PAST DONORS COMMIT TO JEB BUSH
Closing in on a decision on whether to again run for president, Mitt Romney is finding that several of his past donors have defected to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. They include Chicago investor Craig Duchossois, who is among several former Romney supporters who plan to host Bush in Chicago next month for a fundraiser. That event is being arranged by Lisa Wagner, Romney’s 2012 Midwest campaign finance director. Bush has also claimed Romney’s 2012 Texas finance director, Allison McIntosh, and Gordon D. Sondland, who helped raise millions for Romney and the super PAC that supported his candidacy.
